Thanks to a friend, Andrew Bartlett, I have been introduced to the philosopher and spiritual thinker Rudolp Steiner. You may know of his work through the Waldorf schools and education philosophy which he founded. Check out this like to his Wikapidia page and let me know what you think. He reminds me in some ways of me of my favorite spiritual philosopher Ken Wilber.
I am especially interested in a few of his reflections and insights about Christianity and Buddhism. If I understand Steiner correctly, he holds that there a few major turning points in the evolution of human consciousness. One of them is the enlightenment and teaching of Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha). Steiner explains that Siddhartha created through the Eightfold Path a way for humanity to expand consciousness and to rest in Pure Spirit. The Buddha created, a “way” for the mind to be enlightened and expanded the “container” of consciousness.
Steiner then explains that the appearance of the Christ in Jesus filled that container with overflowing Love. Jesus as the Christ was the overflowing of God’s love in human history creating a “way” for the human mind then to overflow with that same energy of Love. The birth of Christ is the human Jesus was another epic moment in the potential for human development. The Buddha allowed human consciousness to develop a healthy autonomous “I,” but instead of leaving us with an individuated ego, which would lead to chaos, consciousness made another momentous leap and filled the heart of the “I” with Love, allow the autonomous “I” to transcend itself. This can be called Divine grace! The Buddha created a container for enlightenment and Christ filled that container with the energy of Love. – I really love this idea - it feels true to me.
The next great jump in human development, according to Steiner (and a little Jud) may be the true integration of these two energies of mindfulness (Big Mind) and Love (Big Heart), but this time not in an individual person, but in a COMMUNITY! See - “The Next Messiah May Be a Collective” blog. Steiner was very encouraged and supportive of Christian community and the potentiality of that community in the transformation of human consciousness.
Steiner seems to have a wonderful mind for integration, and understands the nuances of different spiritual traditions and how they fit into a bigger picture of the evolution of humanity. In this time of Advent, maybe Steiner, like the Old Testament Prophets will help show us the way to the eternal birthing of the Divine Son.
Let me know what you think of Steiner and his insights.
